SPAR, one of the leading grocery retail giants, has begun accepting payments in the world’s largest cryptocurrency, bitcoin (BTC), at its supermarket in Zug, Bahnhofstrasse. The latest development marks a noble step in integrating digital assets into everyday retail transactions.
According to a recent LinkedIn post, BTC Map, a community-driven platform highlighting businesses accepting BTC payments, revealed the store’s BTC transaction.
This SPAR location is among the first supermarkets in Switzerland where you can pay directly at the checkout using Bitcoin (via LNURL), thanks to our new #OpenCryptoPay solution – an open P2P standard for in-person crypto payments,” DFX wrote.
SPAR BTC Payment Strategy
SPAR’s adoption of the crypto asset is part of a broader trend in Switzerland, where several businesses now accept crypto payments. The increasing acceptance signals a shift towards viewing digital assets not only as speculative assets but also as a medium of exchange.
Interestingly, customers can make payments by scanning a QR code at checkout, which streamlines the process and enhances the overall customer experience. Also, the announcement noted that if enough people use the latest payment method, it will be extended nationwide.
Furthermore, according to data from BTC Map, Switzerland reached a new milestone in its crypto journey: 1,013 businesses now accept Bitcoin. The growing acceptance of BTC by globally recognized retailers could enhance mainstream trust in digital assets as a valid payment method. SPAR, for example, operates over 13,900 stores in 48 countries, serving 14.7 million customers daily and employing more than 450,000 people worldwide.
Increasing Crypto Use in Switzerland
Switzerland has long been recognized for its progressive stance on digital assets. According to a statistical report, the number of users in the crypto asset market in the country is expected to surpass approximately 4.22 million this year.
Ultimately, the grocery giant’s move to accept Bitcoin payments could set a precedent, encouraging other retailers to adopt cryptocurrency and accelerating its use in everyday commerce.
In 2023, Lugano, a Swiss city, made headlines by becoming one of the first municipalities globally to accept BTC and Tether for all public service payments. Also, in 2025, the average revenue per user in Switzerland’s crypto market is projected to reach approximately $69.20.
